Your Portuguese roots may open the doors of Europe to you and your family.

Portuguese citizenship grants the right to live, study and work in Portugal and throughout the European Union, and it also opens doors to opportunities in other countries, such as the U.S. E-2 investor visa. In May 2026, a new Nationality Law (Organic Law No. 1/2026) came into force, changing deadlines and requirements. An up-to-date assessment of your case is therefore the first step.

Children of Portuguese Citizens

Children of a Portuguese father or mother born in Brazil remain entitled to Portuguese citizenship by origin, through registration of their birth in Portugal. This is the most direct and secure path.

Grandchildren of Portuguese Citizens

Grandchildren remain eligible, but the new law requires additional proof of an effective connection to the Portuguese community, such as knowledge of the country's language and culture. We assess each case and prepare the documentation to meet the new requirements.

Great-Grandchildren of Portuguese Citizens

New in the 2026 law: great-grandchildren of Portuguese citizens by origin may obtain citizenship through naturalization, provided they have legally resided in Portugal for at least 5 years.

Marriage or Civil Partnership

- Spouses married to a Portuguese citizen for more than 3 years may acquire nationality

- For civil partnerships (união de facto), also of more than 3 years, the partnership must first be recognized by a Portuguese court

- With more than 6 years of marriage or Portuguese children in common, the process becomes simpler

Naturalization by Residence

Brazilians living legally in Portugal may apply for naturalization after 7 years of residence, counted from the issuance of the residence permit. For those planning to move, choosing the right visa is already part of the path to citizenship.
